Tallinn – European Green Capital 2023 is hoping to include local people to contribute to the success of the green transition.

The Tallinn Botanical Garden and Tallinn Zoo are offering free admission to Ukrainian war refugees, who will need to show either a Tallinn smartcard with an identity document, a document proving Ukrainian citizenship or a temporary residence card.

Estonian Designers' Union launched a sustainable design competition RoheAsi (GreenThing) on Monday. The competition is organized in cooperation with the city of Tallinn, which in 2023 will hold the title of European Green Capital.

For the second year in a row, Tallinn will organise New Year's Eve fireworks displays in several different locations to make them as dispersed and safe as possible. The Tallinn City Government and the Estonian Society for the Protection of Animals jointly invite Tallinners to forgo personal fireworks and take part in the controlled fire shows organised by the city.

In the field of urban planning in Tallinn, the focus for the coming year will be on the strategic plan for urban space and the preparation of a general plan for the City Centre as well as maintaining historical buildings in the historic downtown.

The Tallinn City Government has proposed that the City Council amend regulations so that the rate of the parent’s share in kindergarten fees would stay at its current level for residents of Tallinn.

In order to mitigate the impact of rising energy costs, Tallinn City Council allocated €500,000 from its reserve fund to provide income-dependent support to the city’s residents, while also introducing a rent exemption for non-profit entities in the city's premises in February and March to alleviate the impact of rising energy costs.

In the business sector during the past year, supporting commercial operators affected by COVID-19 restrictions was a main priority for Tallinn. Various circular economy projects were also launched.

To preserve the city's architectural heritage, Tallinn is planning a number of restoration projects this year: the roof of St Catherine's Church of the Dominican Monastery will be restored and restoration will continue on the Skoone bastion and its surroundings as well as on the city wall and the lower walls of the Toompea stronghold and the ruins of the Pirita convent.
