Four innovative solutions were selected from this year’s application round of the Tallinnovation smart city competition, organized in cooperation of the Science Park Tehnopol and the City of Tallinn. The winners were road safety sensors, solar-powered luminaries, drones for rescue operations and an innovative package recycling solution.

The Tallinnovation innovation competition is organised jointly by the city of Tallinn and the Tehnopol Science and Business Park with the aim of finding smart city solutions that will improve the services and the environment of the city for residents and visitors. A record 100,000 euros is available for investment in smart city solutions this year.

The Tallinn City Government has allocated €39 000 from its reserve fund to the Tallinn Culture and Sports Department to recognise to support athletes from Tallinn and their coaches who performed successfully at the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Tehnopol Science and Business Park is joining with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications to create an Artificial Intelligence or AI development programme designed to make manufacturing and data-intensive businesses better able to climb up the value chain.

The reconstruction works on Vana-Kalamaja Street in Põhja-Tallinn are approaching completion. The project resulted in a high-quality urban space that ensures safe and comfortable travel for people, with a focus on promoting walking and cycling. The renovated street will be opened during a street festival, which takes place from 1-3 September. The regular route of bus line number 3 will resume on 1 September and the street will reopen to car traffic on the evening of 3 September.

The city plans to gradually reduce street clutter by removing outdated and unnecessary directional signs, focusing instead on keeping only essential public institution or destination markers, while signs pointing to business locations will be phased out.
