Tallinn is focused on environmental sustainability, one of six Factors in the ICF Method defining success for cities and regions in the 21st Century.

The Tallinn City Government has appointed Mart Luik as the Business Director of Tallinn. Luik was selected in a public competition and will start working as the head of Enterprise Service of the Tallinn Strategic Management Office on 24 May.

The MELT Innovation Forum, which was cancelled last spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, will take place virtually this year on the 12th of May. For the first time, the event will be free of charge for all participants. The forum can be followed online at www.melt.ee.

Financial support from the European Union as well as from the states to cities should be provided as a holictic package in order to make urban environments greener and more sustainable, said Tallinn Mayor Mihhail Kõlvart at the Annual Dialogue of EU Capital City Mayors with the European Commission.

Tallinn will lead the newly launched network of 19 European cities, which aims to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the local level.

Today, Tallinn unveiled a Climate Strategy that sets the goal of making the capital climate neutral by 2050. The progressive Tallinn Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Adaptation Plan aims to reduce the urban and economic impact on the climate in a way that enriches the economy and the urban environment. At the international technology and start-up conference Latitude59, taking place in Tallinn from today, Tallinn showcases itself as a green global city characterised by sustainable, eco-friendly and balanced development.

The Tallinnovation innovation competition is organised jointly by the city of Tallinn and the Tehnopol Science and Business Park with the aim of finding smart city solutions that will improve the services and the environment of the city for residents and visitors. A record 100,000 euros is available for investment in smart city solutions this year.

According to the new waste management plan, Tallinn will expand separate collection of biowaste and textile waste, and turn waste collection stations into circular economy centres.

The Tallinn City Council recently adopted the Tallinn Waste Management Plan 2022-2026, which aims to expand the separate collection of bio-waste, promote the collection and handling of textile waste, turn waste stations into recycling centres and encourage re-use. Collecting organic waste separately will become compulsory for all properties already in 2023.
