The Tallinn City Government has assigned the name of Ukraine Square to the so far unnamed square in Lembitu Park in the Sibulaküla subdistrict of Tallinn city centre.
The Patkuli stairway, connecting the Lower Town of Tallinn with the northern side of the Toompea stronghold, will be closed from Monday 6 June until 27 June due to the restoration works of the Toompea’s lower retaining wall.
During the two-day Old Town City Forum experts on urban planning, entrepreneurs, community members and city leaders are looking for practical ways to lead Tallinn's Old Town towards becoming a better living environment and a more attractive place for spending time.
Tallinn City Government and the Tallinn Urban Planning Department have put out for public consultation four preliminary plans for the Old Harbour area, which are open for comments until 12 January. There will also be an outdoor public exhibition next to the Admiralty Bridge, showing the nature of the plans and the proposed buildings.
The plans adopted in Tallinn over the past year are based on the principles of sustainable urban planning, in terms of both housing, jobs and services. Heritage conservation and the preservation of existing built heritage also play an important role in creating a sustainable urban space.
In November of this year, restoration work was completed between the Patkuli viewing platform and the Kitseaia park. The restoration work was carried out in two sections, with a total of 200 meters of retaining wall repaired.
Tallinn's 2023 budget focuses on preserving cultural heritage as well as enhancing the historic urban space and living environment. Next year, the renovation of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town walls, fortifications and buildings will continue, but restoration grants will also increase.
Tallinn City Government has approved the plan for the Rail Baltic Ülemiste passenger terminal and its surrounding area. According to the plan, Ülemiste will be transformed into a transport node linking different nodes of transport, which will significantly improve the quality of public transport.
